German Beer Steins

Kauffman Museum is offering late nineteenth/early twentieth century German beer steins for sale. The steins were part of a private collection before being given to Kauffman Museum by a museum patron.  Proceeds will support the Kauffman Museum Collections Fund.

Kauffman Museum will follow museum-quality standards for packing and shipping.  Buyer is responsible for Kansas sales tax, shipping and insurance costs.  International buyers are additionally responsible for all duty fees.

Sold Antique Character Beer Stein—Smiling Monk

Also known as the grinning monk, this porcelain stein is a rotund, brown-robed monk whose porcelain head is part of the pewter-ringed lid.

Lithophane of young couple embracing.

Pewter thumb lift features a lyre.

Sold Antique Regimental Beer Stein (Cavalry)

Made for Georg Bengeser who served with k.b.1. Sch. Reit. Rgt., Prinz Carl v. Bayern 5. Esk., 1894-1900, München (Mounted Unit of the Royal Bavarian Army Corps)

Porcelain stein (.5 L) with painted decoration of mounted soldier with blue/white pennant, flanked by two other military scenes.  Motto: “Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit” (Memory of my Service).

Signature and address of designer: L. Wolk, Gabelsbergers St. 44.

Lithophane of King Ludwig of Bavaria.

Pewter lid with mounted soldier at top, busts of King Ludwig II, Prince Regent, and King Otto I, coat of arms and military symbols, and thumb lift featuring a rampant crowned lion.

Sold Antique Regimental Beer Stein (Infantry)

Made for Johann Büttner who served with Kgl. 9 Juft. Rgt., Wrede, 11 Komp. Würzburg, 1900-02 (Royal Bavarian Army Corps)

Porcelain stein (.5 L) with painted decoration of a crown over a coat of arms over a foot soldier’s equipment, with banner “In Treue Fest” (Firmly Faithful) flanked by views of military scenes and view of Marienburg and lists of company members.

Signature and address of designer partially legible: München.

Pewter lid showing six-faceted glass prism over hand-painted military camp scene, and thumb lift featuring a rampant crowned lion.

Signs of wear on writing and to paint on base ring; crack in lithophane.

Sold Antique Regimental Beer Stein (Dragoons)

Made for Felix Tietz, who served with 5. Esk. 2 Garde Drag. Regt., Kaiserin Alexandra v. Russl. in Berlin, 1905-08 (Dragoons of the Imperial German Army).

Motto: “Stolz zu Koss die Kavallerie, auf dem Posten Spät und früh” (Pride of the Horse Cavalry, to the Post Late or Early).

Stoneware stein (.5 L) with painted decoration of mounted soldier over black/white/red flags and cavalry equipment, flanking two military scenes and alphabetical list of company members. 

Pewter lid showing mounted soldier at top, military symbols, and thumb lift featuring a crowned eagle on ball and peephole view of Munich on thumb lever.

Lid is poor fit.  Peephole view cracked.  Minor wear to gilt on base ring.
